Kobeejo update and hopeful news
Wendy decided to drive me up to see Kobeejo today. She said she missed him. I was grateful not to have to drive as I had a bad night and was too tired to drive far. We left a bit later than I like... around 2:30. Once again, the traffic was not too bad, so we made it in an hour.
Before we left, Dr. Minuto called. She said Kobeejo was eating well, and if he maintained this level he could go home Saturday. I was thrilled! Last night, I went up to the barn and filled a hay bag full with the first cut hay he loves, and a smaller one with the second cut.
So, I brought all the hay in the net with me and, once in his stall, he immediately dunked his nose into the top of the hay net where I had it open. So I started filling the metal hay bin with his first cut and he was thrilled.
They had removed his bandage so I got a good look at the incision under his belly. I was shocked at how good it looked. It was hardly visible. The bandage, however, had stained parts of his coat a muddy red color. That will need to be cleaned.
Jason took the hay bags to the back where they store his hay. He hung the bag of second cut very high in his stall. I asked them if they could lower it a bit as I never like him having to stretch his neck so far to get it. They said it had to be up due to the catheter in his neck. But they did lower it a bit more.
I decided to take him out to graze, so I put on the sheet (tomorrow, I plan to bring one of his fleece sheets). Because of his attitude yesterday, I placed the chain over his nose, but this time I didn't need it. He was a very good boy. But, it was so cold outside (only 30 degrees) and windy. I didn't say out with him long, cos I was freezing. He, however, didn't want to do anything but eat grass. I do have some concern over his grass-eating, as he has so many insulin and sugar issues, I can't risk upsetting his feet.
I brought him back in after about 15 minutes of grazing. Once again, he wanted to explore the hospital, but I couldn't let him. He keeps looking for Otis, but he was moved to another wing of the hospital. I don't know why. They don't discuss other horse's cases. All I know is he has enteritis. But there is a pretty little mare next to Kobeejo that he is smitten with. As it's the colic ward, I assume she's there for some sort of colic episode, but she is not hooked to any IVs or anything. She might be just on watch.
Once back in his stall, they hooked Kobeejo's IVs all back up and he went right back to his hay. I saw a small poop in his stall and it was almost normal. Just a bit wetter than normal, so looks like his diarrhea is getting better. He was eating his first cut I brought him, then picking a bit at the second cut I brought him and a tiny nibble here and there at Tuft's hay, which he doesn't like much.
I checked his mouth, making sure no hay was balling up in that left cheek and found nothing, so that's good.
Lots of people came to see him, including Tess, who came to see me. She said that I won't see her again, as she has tomorrow and the weekend off, and if Kobeejo goes home Saturday, I obviously won't be back (hopefully). But she is going to keep in touch with me. She is just the nicest person. I have enjoyed our talks.
As Wendy had disappeared, I decided to go find her. She was in the waiting room reading. I wasn't feeling well by that time. I have stomach issues myself. I used the bathroom, but we decided to leave. I went back to Kobeejo and he had stopped eating and was in his "nap" corner. Activity still tires him quickly. So, I gave him one more cookie and gave him lot of kisses good night.
Friends have been sending me money towards his bill, so I paid that portion but I know I still owe probably about $3,000. Overall the entire bill came to over $10,000. Not money we have with me on disability and my mom retired. But we managed. Kobeejo is worth WAY more than mere money!

Top of pic is his sheath, bottom his front legs. You can see the incision on the right, though the pic is a bit off center. |
